Core i7 vs Core i5

by Tom
(Australia)

Hi there, I am having trouble deciding between getting an Intel Core i7 vs Core i5 for my new custom gaming PC. Both seem like good choices for a CPU but which do you recommend I get? What are the differences between the two processors?

The Difference Between Core i7 and i5
by: Julien (Admin)

Hi there Tom, the core i7 and i5 series of processors by Intel are very similar. You may have noticed that the i5 is a little bit cheaper than the i7, and that's because they're in the market to compete with AMD's mid-range price of processors.

So what's the difference between the two processors? Well, let's take the i7 860 vs the i5 750 as an example. Both are quad-core, with 8MB of L3 cache memory, and they both fit into a motherboard with an LGA156 CPU socket.

The only real difference is that the i7 860 has a slightly faster clock speed than the i5 750. So taking all this into account, is it worth getting the i7 860 which is almost $100 more expensive than the i5 750? I think not. Save your money are go with the i5 750 in this case.

But in general, the main point in the core i7 vs core i5 debate is that the i7 series tend to have faster clock speeds and perhaps more L3 cache too, targeting the higher-end gamers.

And on the other hand the i5 series generally have slower clock speeds and sometimes less L3 cache too, and they are mainly targeted towards the mid-range market of gamers.

You can find the Core i7 and Core i5 here at the best prices.
