Is DDR3 Compatible With DDR2

by Paul
(UK)

I'm a total newbie when it comes to this but can you use DDR2 ram in a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P because I read the review and it says it supports DDR3 of 16gb? So does it support DDR2 as well? Do all motherboards that say that support DDR2 ram?

Thanks,
Paul

Hey Paul

To answer your question Paul, no you cannot use DDR2 memory in a motherboard that specifies it needs DDR3 memory. DDR3 RAM is not backwards compatible with DDR2.

A motherboard made for DDR3 memory can only take DDR3 memory and nothing else, and the same goes for a motherboard that is made for DDR2 can only take DDR2.

DDR2 and DDR3 may have the same amount of pins, but the slot layout is different to prevent people from using the wrong type of RAM in the wrong type of slot. Another main difference that you will notice is that DDR3 has 1.5v volts of power, while DDR2 RAM has 1.8 volts.

So make sure you take this consideration into account when choosing your next motherboard and RAM setup.
