Which Parts To Replace

by Christian
(USA)

Hello there, I am in need of some help, I have a computer that I would like to hot rod for gaming. I am so confused as to what I need to replace so that it will run smoothly while playing games.

I have 3 years experiance with building guitar pedals and tube amplifiers so I feel that I can do this if I have the right help.

My PC has a DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D motherboard, ATI Radeon x800 series video card, AMD Athlon 64 processor, Antec true blue 480w power supply, 500gb hard drive.

If you can help me let me know, so far I am really enjoying your website.

Thanks
-Christian

Hey there Christian

By looking at your parts I can tell your overall system is easily over 3-4 years old. In the land of gaming computers that is quite a long time. What you should do depends on what types of games you want to play, and at what quality?

If you want to keep up with the latest games on offer at the moment then your best bet would probably be to buy or build an entire new system from scratch, or just replace your core components such as your CPU, Motherboard, RAM, and Video Card.

If you upgrade all these components then you could definitely re-use some of your old parts if you wanted to such as the monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, hard drive, and possibly the power supply aswell to save you money.

If on the other hand this is not an option for you, and you just want to improve performance with what you have at the moment, then definitely look into adding extra RAM first and see if that helps. Adding extra RAM is always a cheap yet worthwhile investment.

But like I said, what you do all depends on what games you want to run.

Are These Good Gaming PC Parts?

Ok, you have helped me tons with picking out products, can you go over my list to see if what I picked out will mesh with each other and be a great gaming computor? Also the games I play are FPS( such as call of duty, Starwars republic commando) and WW2 Flight sims (such as IL2 Sturmovik)

Thanks,
Christian

Heres my list from TigerDirect.com

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad
Motherboard: XFX nforce 750i SLI Extreme

I've checked out your parts and yes that looks like a decent gaming setup. And yes they will all work well together.

All those components seem very affordable too. With that CPU, motherboard, RAM, and video card you will be able to play most games at high settings, including those games you specifically mentioned.
