Reader Build Requirements

Please provide details on what you'll be doing with this PC, including any specific games/applications/performance-aims etc:

"With my PC I would like to be able to play Dark Souls 3, World of War Craft, and Counter Strike Global Offensive, be able to surf the internet, check emails, create/edit emails, and stream videos from YouTube and Netflix. I want to be able to do all of these things at a reasonable speeds at decent graphic settings. I want to be able to surf the web at a fast speed."

What is your maximum budget or budget range (not including rebates or shipping)?:

"The maximum amount of money I would like to spend on it is 900 dollars."

Which components and/or accessories do you want included in your parts list?"

  • Tower (CPU, Motherboard, RAM, Graphics Card, Power Supply, Case)
  • Standard Hard Drive
  • SSD (if budget allows)
  • Operating System (Windows)
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Monitor

Other Reader Requirements:

"I would like at least 500 GB either of solid state drive or 1 TB of regular hard drive. If buying a solid state drive would put the price over than a regular hard drive would be fine."

"If the case could be mainly black that would be the best. I want it to be not obtrusive. This is the first time I've ever built a computer and the only things I know are from your articles as well as first hand accounts."

Hey Logan, thanks for your build request and I hope you're satisfied with the component list I've compiled for you. The fairly recently released Dark Souls 3, which is the most graphically (and CPU-intensive) game you mentioned in your requirements, will require a decent gaming PC to run well.

A maximum budget of $900 is more than enough for good performance though, but it was a tight fit to include the OS and a decent monitor too (no point getting a crappy monitor for gaming) and so to cuts costs I've opted for a mini-tower build. However, don't let the size fool you as this build still packs a punch.

With the well-priced i5-6500 (great buy if you're not overclocking) and the very capable Gigabyte AMD R9 380 4GB video card it'll run Dark Souls 3 quite well (and most other current titles).

What do I mean by "quite well"? Well, you can't expect flawless performance (60 fps) on the highest graphic settings - however if you tone down the settings a bit then you will get flawless-like performance. But if you do want to play on the highest graphic settings because you want the absolute best graphic detail, then don't get me wrong it'll still be quite playable (I'd estimate around 40-45 FPS on average).

That's assuming you'll be playing in 1080p resolution. By the way, I opted for the R9 380 over the GeForce 960 (its close competitor) because it will outperform the 960 in Dark Souls 3 slightly and the cards are priced almost identically right now.

For your price range I could not include an SSD, as I needed to keep your budget for the OS and monitor, and also just a heads up that you don't have a DVD drive (you didn't tick it on the required components list - so just making sure you're aware of that) and so I've included Windows 10 on a USB flash drive (easy as pie to install).

Anyway, hope this is what you're looking for and if you have any questions or need clarification on something, do let us know. Enjoy your new machine!
